Nikita Milivojević – new Artistic Director of Bitef

Nikita Milivojević has been appointed the new Artistic Director of Bitef by the City of Belgrade Assembly. Nikita has received the mandate to create a new concept and select performances for the festival based on his vision of Bitef.
Nikita Milivojević is one of the leading theatre directors in the country and a professor at the Academy of Art in Novi Sad. He achieved a notable career both in Serbia and around the world. Nikita directed in England, the USA, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Macedonia. He is the winner of all relevant theatre awards in his country: 'Bojan Stupica’ award, several Sterija awards, 'Politika’ award for the best director at the 31st Bitef, the critics’ award of the theatre magazine 'Scena’, the annual awards of many theatres and festivals (National Theatre in Belgrade, Serbian National Theatre, Yugoslav Drama Theatre, Little Theatre 'Duško Radović’, Šabac Theatre 'Ljubiša Jovanović’, Theatre City Budva…). He was the director of Bitef Theatre from 2005 to 2009 and achieved numerous international successes during his tenure. The biography of Nikita Milivojević was presented in the monograph 'I’m Coming Down’ which was published last year.

Nikita Milivojević replaces Ivan Medenica as Artistic Director of Bitef, who held this position for the previous seven years (50-56 Bitef), and whose mandate expired in December 2022. Before him, the program was curated by Anja Suša (40-50 Bitef), Jovan Ćirilov (1-49 Bitef), and Mira Trailović (1-22 Bitef).
Bitef was founded in 1967 on the initiative of Mira Trailović and Jovan Ćirilov. Growing and developing, it became one of the largest and most important European festivals. For more than half a century, Bitef overcomes all political and cultural barriers and successfully keeps pace with the turbulent evolution of contemporary performing arts. That is why the history of Bitef can be called the history of modern world theatre.
