Pamięci Anny Politkowskiej

Ogólnoświatowe czytanie poświęcone pamięci Anny Politkowskiej.
20 marca, 2007 TEATR POLSKI BYDGOSZCZ godz 19

Fragment książki Anny Politkowskiej przeczyta Beata Bandurska. Wstęp wolny

Huge response to the worldwide reading in memory of Anna Politkovskaya on March 20, 2007, the Anniversary of the Political Lie

"The world capitals flash before my eyes as I campaign for support. This spring I've been in Amsterdam, Paris, Geneva, Manila, Bonn, Hamburg… Everywhere they invite me to make a speech about 'the situation in Chechnya,' but there are zero results. Only polite Western applause in response to the words: 'Remember, poeple are continuing to die in Chechnya every day. Including today.'
It's a clear, obvious, unbelievable worldwide betrayal of humanitarian values. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a little more than half a century old, has fallen in the second Chechen war."

The Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics' call for a worldwide reading in memory of Anna Politkovskaya has attracted great interest. On March 20, 2007, the Anniversary of the Political Lie, almost one hundred institutions, private individuals and schools in 19 countries will remember the assassinated Russian journalist. More than 100.000 people will attend the readings or listen to the radio broadcasts.
Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek will assist in the campaign with a reading of Politkovskaya's text "Makhkety: A Concentration Camp with a Commercial Streak" (from the book "A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya" by Anna Politkovskaya, translated by Alexander Burry and Tatiana Tulchinsky, © 2003 The University of Chicago). The recording will be aired by Deutschlandradio on March 20 at 7:30 PM. Further radio stations in Austria, Columbia, Switzerland, Poland, the USA and Germany will be also participating with readings, interviews and reportages.

The events will be held at the following places: Antananarivo (MAD), Bamberg (D), Barcelona (E), Basel (CH), Berlin (D), Bonn (D), Bremen (D), Brussels (B), Bydgoszcz (PL), Coburg (D), Cottbus (D), Edinburgh (GB), Frankfurt (D), Freiburg (D), Graz (A), Hall i.T. (A), Hamburg (D), Hanau (D), Hanover (D), Helsinki (FIN), Kaliningrad (R), Karthum (SUD), Koblenz (D), Kwazulu-Natal (SA), Leipzig (D), Ludwigshafen (D), Lugano (CH), Los Angeles (USA), Lübeck (D), Luxemburg (LUX), Magdeburg (D), Milan (I), Mannheim (D), Montreal (CND), Moscow (R), Munich (D), Omsk (R), St. Petersburg (R), Prague (CS), Ramallah (Palestine), Rome (I), Rostock (D), Sasso Marconi (I), Seattle (USA), Schwedt (D), Stockholm (S), Tblissi (GEO), Valencia (E), Vienna (A), Zurich (CH). For an exact listing of the whereabouts and times, please visit our website www.peter-weiss-stiftung.de.

At many venues there will be discussions following the reading, with friends and acquaintances of Anna Politkovskaya participating. Some institutions will remember also the journalist Hrant Dink, who was murdered in January 2007. The campaign is supported by Reporters without Borders, the PEN Writers in Prison Committee, other PEN centers in various countries, by the Goethe Institute and the German Writers Union. In her reportages Anna Politkovskaya described the catastrophe of the Chechen war, which was begun for paltry reasons and has since gone on, conducted far from the public eye. Her texts portray scenes of torture, reconstruct cold blooded murder, condemn the cynicism of bureaucrats, depict the misery and desperation of a civilian population that is being torn between the army and rebels, and offer a nightmarish picture of the climate of state-fueled fear and repression in Russia.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq the Peter Weiss Foundation initiated a worldwide reading on March 20, 2006, for the first time. On this "Anniversary of the Political Lie ", Eliot Weinberger's text "What I Heard about Iraq" was recited in 47 venues worldwide – in Australia, USA, Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg, India and Switzerland. The aim of these events and campaigns was to raise awareness of matters and forms of political communication. The Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics, based in Berlin, also organises the international literature festival berlin, together with the Berliner Festspiele. Plans for the next worldwide reading on March 20, 2008 are underway.

Die Veranstaltungen finden u.a. an folgenden Orten statt: Antananarivo (MAD), Bamberg (D), Barcelona (E), Basel (CH), Berlin (D), Bonn (D), Bremen (D), Brüssel (B), Bydgoszcz (PL), Coburg (D), Cottbus (D), Edinburgh (GB), Frankfurt (D), Freiburg (D), Graz (A), Hall i.T. (A), Hamburg (D), Hanau (D), Hannover (D), Helsinki (FIN), Kaliningrad (R), Karthum (SUD), Koblenz (D), Kwazulu-Natal (SA), Leipzig (D), Ludwigshafen (D), Los Angeles (USA), Lübeck (D), Lugano (CH), Luxemburg (LUX), Magdeburg (D), Mailand (I), Mannheim (D), Montreal (CND), Moskau (R), München (D), Omsk (R), St. Petersburg (R), Prag (CS), Ramallah (Palästina), Rom (I), Rostock (D), Sasso Marconi (I), Seattle (USA), Schwedt (D), Stockholm (S), Tiflis (GEO), Valencia (E), Wien (A), Zürich (CH).
